The Red Raider of Texas Tech

The Red Raider of Texas Tech

Texas Tech apparel, leaves no doubt as to who your favorite collegiate sports team is.

When the school was founded in 1925, their original nickname was The Matadors, chosen to reflect the campus’s Spanish renaissance architecture. The red and black colors of Texas Tech apparel were selected since they represented the traditional colors of the matador’s outfit. The exact origins of the Red Raider are a little less certain.

Depending on the story you believe, in 1932 or ‘34, a sports journalist (from either Los Angeles or the Lubbock Avalanche Journal) once noted that the Red Raiders from Texas Tech were the terrors of the southwest (or something to that effect). In any case, by 1936, the nickname Red Raiders had become so popular that it officially replaced the Matadors as the school nickname.

When you put on your Texas Tech football jersey to cheer your team, you should know that Texas Tech is the only school in the Big 12 to have a winning record every year since the conference was started in 1996. In fact, its string of 13 consecutive winning seasons ranks as the 4th longest in the nation. The Red Raiders have also appeared in 32 Bowl games.

Is basketball more to your liking? Then men put on your dri-fit polo, and ladies your vintage t-shirt and head over to United Spirit Arena. The men’s program was headed by legendary coach Bobby Knight from 2001 – 2007, and when tech defeated the New Mexico Lobos on January 1, 2007, he became the winningest coach in NCAA history. The Red Raiders have also made 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. As impressive as that is, it is the Lady Raiders who have the honor of winning Texas Tech’s only National Championship, led by Sheryl Swoopes, in 1993 (when the University was still a member of the Southwest Conference).
